Whether you're working in a dedicated shop, or you are a weekend woodworker in your garage, dust management is imperative. The effects of dust in your shop can range from dust in your finish to dust in your lungs - a potential heath issue. In the last few years this understanding has led to an added emphasis on the importance of dust management in woodworking.
Think your shop is dust free? Think again. Try this test the next time you spend a day in the shop. When you are done for the day, grab a bright flashlight or laser pointer, turn out the lights and turn on the flashlight or pointer - all that dust in the air you see is the same stuff you've been breathing the whole time you've been working. Quite a shock, huh? FYI - this is also a great way to tell if your shop is clean enough for finishing.
Two of the most cost effective dust management tools you can add to your shop are a dust collector and an air filtration system. Used correctly, the dust collector will take care of the chips and bigger dust your tools put off, while the air filtration unit will trap all but the very smallest particles of dust as it recirculates your shop air.
